CLASS DESCRIPTION:
|
| |
|
|
|
Iyengar Method Yoga: Based on the teaching of BKS Iyengar of India and the astanga yoga of Patanjali. These classes are lessons in the study of yoga, focusing on form and alignment to improve flexibility and strength to support health and equanimity. Contrary to popular notion, flexibility is not a requirement to practice yoga but may be a consequence!
Foundational: For the absolute beginner new to yoga. This class will teach you the fundamentals of yoga poses and prepare you for level I/II. This is yoga for everybody. All welcome.
Level I/II: For the experienced beginner and those new to the Iyengar method of yoga. Having studied the fundamentals this class will provide you with a moderate-paced weekly yoga session.

Level II/III: For the experienced student. In this class we will practice longer holdings and more advanced inversions. You will be expected to have a home practice and develop familiarity with the Sanskrit names of asana (poses).
Restorative Yoga: Antaratma sadhana (inner atman) is the deepest level of practice. By working with the breath in supported asana the student moves further inward towards the atman and equanimity. Resting poses, which utilise props, are said to decrease stress and boost immune function. Deeply relaxing.
Youth Yoga: Suitable for 13 to 18. A great way to loosen up and develop strength, stamina and co-ordination. Join with a group of friends. Get agile and stealthy!
Yoga for Healthy Aging: This class is a wonderful way to stretch and strengthen with a group of your peers. We will make use of chairs and other props to assist in making the yoga poses more approachable. Open to all. Those with chronic injury and health conditions are welcome with physician clearance.

The Bhagavad Gita with Edwin Bryant September 12th, 13th, 14th 2008
The Bhagavad Gita is perhaps the most representative and certainly the most influential and popular text from the numerous and varied spiritual traditions of Hindu India. Spoken by Lord Krishna to Arjuna who is undergoing a moment of existential crisis, the text deals with the nature of the self, the world, ultimate reality, the purpose of human existence, and the spiritual paths that can be undertaken to accomplish this purpose. No prior knowledge of Hinduism is necessary for this seminar; the only requirement is to bring an open mind and sincere heart. Students are encouraged to procure any edition of the text, particularly versions that have the Sanskrit text in Roman script, since we will chant some of the Sanskrit verses together.
Edwin Bryant received his Ph.D in Indic languages and Cultures from Columbia University. He taught Hinduism at Harvard University for three years, and is presently the professor of Hinduism at Rutgers University. He is a personal practitioner of yoga for 28 years, a number of them spent in India studying with traditional teachers, where he returns yearly, Edwin strives to combine academic scholarship and rigor with sensitivity towards traditional knowledge systems.
